I’ve always been a moon worshipper. Some of my fondest memories are of being under the moonlight. When I first started to explore paganism, I would sit in my backyard and talk to the moon. Nothing formal, nothing fancy, just full moon and I get together once a month to chat about my plans and life. It just felt right.

The moon has a lot of effects on the Earth and on us, both on the mundane level and the metaphysical level. The moon effects the tides of the oceans, the migrations and reproduction cycles of animals, the menstrual cycles in humans, and can even change the sleep patterns in all of us. That little ball of rock and ice that orbits our home approximately 238,860 miles away, has affected this planet for eons. Every culture has a myth about how the moon came to be and at least one deity that is represented by the moon.

I’m going to focus right now on the Full Moon and what it means metaphysically. I may be friends with an astrophysicist, but I am in no way qualified to discuss the moon as an astronomical object. On the other hand, I am a witch and I am qualified to discuss the Moon in metaphysics.

Metaphysically, Full Moon encompasses when the Moon is at its brightest, 3 days before that point, and 3 days after. A Full Moon occurs once every 28 days (give or take a little) and there are 13 of them in a year. In many witchcraft practices, the Full moon is a time of magic and ritual. Many covens will honor the day with a gathering called an Esbat. These moon gatherings are times of spell casting, intention writing, self-reflection, and any other magical act that needs to take place. Depending on the season and circumstances of the witch, esbats can be festive occasions, somber occasions, or solitary occasions. It is even mentioned in The Charge of the Goddess, (" Whenever you have need of anything, once in the month and better it be when the moon is full, then shall ye assemble in some secret place and adore the spirit of me, who am Queen of all witches.")

Magically, Full Moon is the time to bless and charge your crystals and tools with the Moons Energy. Items can be ritually cleansed and charged under the moonlight or allowed to rest in the light of the Moon for a time. It is believed that the light of a Full Moon will burn off any negative energies the tools may have accumulated and will fill the tools with blessed energy. I’ve even heard that some witches charge their tools in the moonlight as a way of reconnecting the cards to the Universal Consciousness.

Moon Water

This is the perfect time to make moon water. Simply take and place water in the moonlight and allow the moon’s energy to charge it. Moon water can be consumed (if potable), used as water on the altar, be the base of potions, and used for ritual bathing. Moon water adds that cosmic boost anywhere water is used in your magic.

-time of meditation and divination

-time to cleanse and do a monthly deep clean of the home.

-time to reset any wards around your home.
