What are Bind Rune? They are one of the two types of combined runes. in our modern times they are most often used for magical purposes. They are a form of sigils using runes It is believed that the combining of runes together for your intentions creates a more powerful symbol. I can totally see that because when you are creating your own (vs. using ones you find on the internet that others have created) you are adding your own energy, emotion, creativity,, and focus into the creation. That is not to say there is never a time to use ones that were created by others.
In the actual Viking era they were most often used to sign the name of the carver or just as a decoration.. They were used in magical amulets later in Iceland and we can find some from around the 1600s in Mediaeval manuscripts.
Types of Bind Runes
There are three basic types of Bind Runes: Stacked, Same-Stave, and Radial.
Stacked
These are the most commonly used Bind Rune. They are made of two (occasionally three) runed that are stacked on top of one another on the same axis. There is a common one we are all familiar with, even though most do not realize it it a Bind Rune and that is the Bluetooth symbol.. Which is a combination of Gebo and Berkana.
Same-Stave
These are runes that are written in a specific order along a common axis or stave. These were the most common used in Scandinavian runic inscriptions. They can be used in magic to us to write a word of power to attack an issue. Odin written as a Same-stave Bind Rune.. Using Othala, Dagaz, Isa, and Nauthiz.
Radial
These Bind Runes have each rune or combination of runes on staves that radiate out from a central point. These were often uses in Icelandic Staves . These are great to use for protection. . Here is an example that uses Teiwaz, Ansuz, Fehu,, Gebo,, Ansuz, Raido.
